EDCI 419/518 Curriculum and Instruction: Reading in the Content Area is designed to assist the prospective single subject teacher in acquiring knowledge and skills for teaching reading in their subject area. The specific components of the reading process are examined along with appropriate methods and materials available to be used in instruction. A main focus is assessment of students' strengths and weaknesses relative to the reading act, the development of curriculum objectives, and the planning of instruction to meet the needs of all learners at grade level academic performance. TPEs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12 are embedded in this course.
Applications of skills and knowledge are provided through a field experience with students experiencing difficulties in a content area. This course gives emphasis to the literacy needs of English proficient and English language learners (ELLs). It addresses needs of diverse students--culturally, ethnically, linguistically, and socio-economically. It also emphasizes accommodating reading instruction for students with Special Needs. Candidates learn to assess students for language proficiency (at four specific levels), provide instruction appropriate to individual levels of language proficiency, conduct assessment (initial, ongoing, and summative) for language proficiency, and write summative assessment reports. It emphasizes brain-science and learning.
